1111 E Union Design Review

September 2nd, 2009 · View Comments · By Matt

I swung by the 1111 E Union Design review a little late this evening. This is a 100 unit apartment project going up at 12th and Madison where the Buzz Stop, Color Store and Undre Arm apartments are. Right across from the arts co-op building.

The design presented was very modern (CHS has a rendering). Unfortunately the design presented has A LOT going on. It’s very angular (it is a triangular site after all), has a sloping roof line, dark metal exterior, a variety of window bay sizes, and on and on. While I like that it is modern and trying something different, they are experimenting with way too many ideas.

The response from both the board and the public was that there was too much going on and that the building was too much of a departure from neighboring buildings; they’re rejecting the design.

This was only my second design review and was my first seeing Dennis Saxman in action.

I don't care what anybody says about Dennis Saxman, he is AWESOME. I hope that he stops all new buildings on the Hill in their tracks. He is the only person that gets it. Old buildings are good. New buildings are bad. Old ideas are good. New ideas are bad. Developers and architects and city planners are stupid. The DRB is stupid. Cars are stupid. Power to the people!
