Wood Floor Re-Finishing Recommendations

October 16th, 2009 · Comments · By Matt

It doesn’t take much to dent the reclaimed Douglas fir floors at Trace Lofts. Drop your keys and they’ll leave a mark.

Needless to say, when your house cleaner rolls out your fridge with the best intentions of cleaning the top of it, it’ll leave quite a mark.

And since the floors are reclaimed, good luck getting more of the same floor.

So, does anyone have some recommendations for wood floor re-finishers? What we’d like to do is sand them down and oil. Our neighbors did this and it looks so much better than the satin finish.

Anyone have any recos for cedar floors? Although very cool-sounding, I don't think the chain-saw look will go well in our non-hipster house.
  • Fir floors are beautiful, but what a pain to maintain. Probably why they used to be used only on 2nd floors, bedrooms, etc. I like the distressed look, I think the chain-finish idea sounds pretty good.

LOL Well, I have friends in Chicago that did it, and family members back home. I myself and contemplating doing it here in my space. So, as far as anyone that currently has this kind of finish on their floors in Seattle, I am uncertain where you could go.

A cool effect in a modern space (like your loft), is to take a belt sander and sand the floor's top finish right off. Then, take a chain, and beat the ever-living sh*t out of the floors (not kidding). Then apply a wood oil to the floors, and I am telling you they turn out AMAZING and very unique. Plus, you'll never have to worry about anyone scuffing or denting or marking your floors again (it blends right in).
  • I've heard that advice before. Do you know of any spaces where we could see
    it in person?
