Finally A Good Night’s Sleep

March 15th, 2010 · View Comments · By Matt

It is noisy living at 12th and Madison. We’re literally on the corner facing both 12th and Madison, a five way intersection. In the evenings the newly opened bars and restaurants mean the area is staying noisier later. Plus life on the street gets going early with leaf blowing, blaring car stereos, neighbors’ alarm clocks and the Ferrari dealer’s service department.

After toughing out the noise for two and a half years I caved and did a search on Amazon for noise machines. About thirty seconds later I had Prime’d a Sound Conditioner Sound Screen SleepMate Electro-Mechanical White Noise Machine (must have been named by Microsoft’s marketing department). It arrived two days later and we’ve slept better ever since!

So if noise is bothering you in your downtown condo, I highly recommend it.

Unless you sleep with the window open, I'm a little surprised to hear noise complaints when you live in a solid brick building. You might want to check that they insulated around the windows completely with foam (got to pull the trim off), even small air gaps will let sound though. Adding inside soundproofing windows does work, I've slept soundly at a hotel overlooking a taxiway at Heathrow airport. I think they had 4 layers of glass.

You shouldve thought about the "city noise" before wanting to live downtown! hahahaha....ear plugs are cheaper btw :)

I have one of these also and they work great, although you will still hear deep bass from vehicles driving by/parking nearby and playing rap at 3AM. ***holes.
  • so, may I ask, what is the difference between this and an air filter that produces a constant white noise also?

If this can block out the noise from the Pony I am on-board.
