What an awful design. Why in the world would the architect place a garage out front next to the sidewalk, especially in an inner-city neighbourhood?? The garage–if there is a garage at all–should be tucked away behind the house next to the alley and the door moved forward to the sidewalk. This is the 2010s, not the 1950s. Cities are supposed to put people first, not cars.

“But that’s what the client wanted”, you’ll say. But it’s not all about what the client wants; it’s also about what the public want who are affected by the client’s tastes. The client’s property interfaces with public property and thereby affects people who use the sidewalk, therefore the city has the right to impose certain zoning guidelines that take into account how surrounding public spaces might be affected.
