1909 32nd Ave S

Last week I attended a preview event for the 2,800 square foot Morris residence that was designed by Milton Stricker, an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright. I arrived at the preview with the expectation that I would learn more about the architectural style of the home: northwest contemporary with mid-century flare. What I left with was an appreciation for its expansive views of Lake Washington, architectural details, and a glimpse of what it might be like to work directly with an architect to design and build a home.

After poking my nose into every room, I ambled over to the dining table to examine the plans and drawings on display. As if leafing through a family photo album, the Morris’ shared tidbits about the sketches and blueprints from Stricker. For example, Stricker sketched the below image of the living room in his first meeting with the couple before he was officially signed to the project.

Surprisingly, the end result wasn’t too far changed from the initial concept.

The media blast offered further insight into Stricker’s design:

Representing one of the last designs by Milton Stricker, The Morris Residence was in part, drafted by his son Paul since his father’s eyesight was failing. Although built in 1990 this home, sited above Coleman Park in the Mt. Baker neighborhood, is reminiscent of a combined mid- century design and northwest contemporary esthetics. The open spaces and use of refined woods create a warm, timeless ambiance that is the precursor to today’s modern designs. An advocate of “organic architecture”, Milton Stricker “blended” all his homes to meld with the terrain, vegetation and views, which effectively becomes part of their exterior environment. The gardens surrounding the Morris home were designed by Terry Welch and feature Asian simplicity.

Located at 1909 32nd Ave S, the Morris Residence is a 3-bedroom, 2.25 bath home that was just listed for $1.2M. Besides the Redfin listing, this home is also featured on 360 Modern, a consortium of agents that specialize in Modern real estate sales.
