Must See Open Houses – July 19 and July 20

By July 18, 2014

Denny Blaine, Houses, Madison Park

It’s all about the ’40s on this week’s Open House update.  Perhaps not a typical decade for Urban Living, but these three picks are unusual for the era.

Neighborhood: View Ridge

Open Houses: Saturday, July 19, 10 am – 4pm and Sunday, July 20, 12-4 pm

First up, an architect’s home in View Ridge.  Built in 1940, this L-shaped 4 bedroom, 3.25 bath home listed for $895,000 was ahead of its time.  It’s design reflects the surrounding half acre of wooded property with Lake Washington, Mount Rainier, and seasonal Mount Baker views.  Since this is the first time it’s been on the market in over 70 years, I will try to forgive the mismatched staging that does nothing but hide the true beauty of this house.  If you’re interested in undertaking a unique historic remodel, this is an interesting contender.

Open Houses: Saturday, July 19th, 1-3 pm and Sunday, July 20, 1-3 pm

Built in 1941, this pink cape cod is super mod.  The wallpaper that connects the living and dining rooms is an excellent contemporary addition to original retro accents, like the over-sized parquet wall and vintage oven.  The basement bonus room with fireplace is also pretty amazing.  It’s like having a secret log cabin…downstairs.  This 3 bedroom, 1.75 bath house is just blocks from Madison Park restaurants, shops, and parks.  In fact, plenty of time to move in while you can still enjoy the beach.

You would probably never guess that this house was originally built in 1947.  Well, most of the house anyway.  A complete overhaul remodeled the main and lower floors and added an entire second floor, increasing the size from 1,880 sq ft to 3,743 sq ft.  They opened up the main floor and brightened the space with maple cabinets and Cararra marble in the central kitchen.  The floating fir staircases keep light flowing from giant windows.  The backyard has been expertly landscaped to create a calming retreat.
