Remodeled midcentury modern has an open-air basement

It’s worth taking a close look at 13249 6th Avenue NW in Broadview. It has some very visible updates from 2013 in line with more modern-day trends, like Hardiplank siding. But take a peek inside (or out back) for a stunning midcentury built in 1965. A split entry takes you upstairs for a great room, but head downstairs for a small, indoor den—and the more exciting outdoor den, complete with fireplace, sheltered by the cantilevered top floor. It flows seamlessly into a woodsy back patio with a hot tub, or up a couple of open-air stair staircases to the main floor.

While many of the finishes have been updated—metal facing on the upstairs fireplace, for example—the shape and bones are still here. A combination of floor-to-ceiling and clerestory windows in the sunken living room show that the upper floor is surrounded by treetops, well-complemented by a lovingly preserved exposed-beam ceiling. A large, only semi-open eat-in kitchen has plenty of workspace. The four bedrooms look new and tidy, but still have accents of exposed beams on the ceiling.

The architect is Donald M. Wilson, a born-and-raised Seattleite who also designed the historic Burlington Fire & Police Station.
